On the 31st May, the final day of Spring, the Church celebrated Trinity Sunday when at the 10am Parish Eucharist, Reader Rosemary's homily included interesting observations about Spanish navigations by sea in the 15th century, in search of a western route to the East Indies. Spanish Catholic monarchs encouraged Columbus - that great seafarer - to take up these adventures whereupon the Americas were found. The "name of the most holy Trinity" was to be made known to the indigenous peoples. In 1498, Columbus came upon an island with three peaks and it was duly named Trinidad. The word 'Trinity' in fact does not appear at all in the Holy Bible yet the doctrine within the Christian faith spoke then, as it does now, of a Trinitarian or Triune God. Father, Son and Holy Spirit are co-equal, interconnected and inseparable yet each part an entity in itself, collectively acting as a mirror into God's kingdom. The Triune Father is with us on our spiritual journey with all its ups and downs. The Christian Faith is not a closed triangle. The Trinity offers us Love, Hope and Grace. The readings for the day were from: Isaiah 40. 12-17, 27-31. Two Corinthians 13. 11-13. Matthew 28. 16-20.
Here are some notes for your calendars and diaries which give future activities at St Andrew's Church, remembering of course, that our two notice boards outside and the extensive church website give far more information, including things further afield in the St Albans Diocese. On Saturday, 6th June, between 10 and 12, there is Coffee Shop in the Chapter House and a Car Wash in the carpark in aid of our Mafambisa trip this year. On Sunday, 7th June, there is Said Holy Communion at 8am and our All Together Eucharist at 10am. At 12:45pm, there is our Sunday Lunch in the Chapter House for those who have previously signed up. Then, at 6pm, there will be Deanery Evening Worship at St Mary's Church, Potton. On 14th June, Confirmation takes in the 10am Service. On 20th June, at 7pm, there is a Quiz Night with Bangers and Mash, a fundraiser for the 2026 Mafambisa Trip. 21st June: Generous Giving Sunday. Later that day, at 5:30pm, there is a Taize Evening Service at Cockayne Hatley Church. On 27th June, at 7:30pm, there is the East Beds Chamber Concert.
Two concluding topics to end this week's St Andrew's report: The church is joining the inaugural Biggleswade in Bloom 2026 and so our green surrounds and flower beds will no doubt be tended with added enthusiasm this Summer. This year's St Andrew's Church Summer Holiday Club 2026 will be commencing on Tuesday, 18th August and ending on Friday, 21st August. Then, the Holiday Club's Service on Sunday, 23rd August, will include all or some of the themes followed during the week and is always a joyous event. This begins at 10am and afterwards, the usual Barbeque will take place.
