St Andrews Update Trinity 18

Last Sunday was indeed a rather overcast and drizzly sort of day but Reverend Liz's homily gave sustenance for thought and enabled us to view things more spiritually beyond the weather and the mood that can so often be manufactured by gloomy conditions. The readings for that particular 10am Parish Eucharist were: Genesis 32. 22-31, 2 Timothy 3. 14-4. 5, and Luke 18. 1-8. They are inter-connected in theme.  The story of Jacob's monumental bout of all night wrestling with 'another man' can be expressed of course as a metaphor.  It is about 'wrestling' with God.  To use a more sporty phrase perhaps, we have all 'to hang in there', so to speak, when we have an issue to be clarified and sorted.  Go to God.  The parable of the 'persistent widow' seems to be about: -  if you continue to pester someone, even towards those who are frauds, in the end, the person in power will grant your wishes, if only for a peaceful life.  The message for us is to simply be persistent in prayer.  Again, hang in there.  You're seeking God, not an impatient local magistrate.  In times to reflect, prayer is important.  We also need to know where God is moving.  Prayer is two-way; we need to Listen.  A conscious kindness in our approach is another central ingredient.

At the start of the service, the congregation present, were given a viewing of an impressive number of new Albs for Servers at and around the altar, and these duly received a Blessing by the vicar.  The Albs were donated by Nick and brother, in memory of their parents, Norman and Jo, who were much loved stalwarts of the church and well remembered for their lovable personalities and many years of service.

Meanwhile, our MAP (mission action plan) for St Andrew's continues to be: Christ centred, Welcoming, Inclusive, Outward Looking.  However, we are looking to see where things need 'brushing up' and that may need a change in wording.  In Biggleswade, it is a joy to receive real evidence that our own Churches Together are really living up to that title, as places of different denominations, seeking a real approach to working together.

Here are come additional diary notes and pieces of news applicable to St Andrew's Church:  Between 10am and 12 noon, on Saturday, 25th October, there is Coffee Shop in the Chapter House.  All are welcome. On Sunday, 26th October, at 10am, there is Parish Eucharist. Lots going on.  On Sunday, 2nd November, there is 8am Said Holy Communion, Order Two, Book of Common Prayer, a more traditional service.  At 10am, there is an All Together Eucharist, during which, our annual and very long established bringing up of the 'shoeboxes' will take place which will then shortly be transported to very needy and vulnerable children overseas. At 6pm, there is an All Souls service when we remember the faithful departed.

On Saturday, 8th November, between 10:30am and 3pm, there will be a Special Quiet Day with Holy Communion at 12 noon, open to all.  The Leader will be Reverend Barbara and the Celebrant will be Reverend Liz.  This will be a day for reflection, prayer, and addresses.  Those attending can pray, read, walk or just sit.  Some refreshments will be provided but it is suggested you bring a packed lunch.  On the next day. 9th November, Parish Eucharist will begin half an hour earlier, at 9:30am.  This is to make sufficient time space for the Remembrance Day Service at 10:45 am in the Market Square.

Always remember that St Andrew's is generally open to all from Mondays to Fridays between 9am and 4pm for quiet and private prayer.
